Starbucks expanding effort to help businesses create jobs

Starbucks is expanding an unusual effort to create jobs through small business loans, which the company launched last fall after chief executive Howard Schultz lambasted politicians for not doing more to fix the economy.

So far the Create Jobs for USA program has raised about $11.5 million, including about $2.8 million from customers who bought brightly colored wristbands along with their lattes or donated to the program online.

Starbucks says its analysis shows the money raised so far could create or retain about 4,000 jobs.

10 Ways to Increase the Value of Your Home

In a dour housing market, wouldn't it be nice to know that your remodeling project would pay off when you went to sell the property? Remodeling Magazine evaluated the top remodeling projects, how the cost-to-value has changed since the housing market implosion, and which projects are still worth the investment. Using the magazine's "Cost Vs. Value Report for 2008-2009," let's look at some of the best projects you can undertake and recoup the majority of your cost.

Upscale Projects

  • Siding Replacement (fiber-cement or foam-backed vinyl). With the economic slump, home buyers aren't being dazzled by bells and whistles as much as they are improvements that will ensure lower repair and utility bills. Although replacing current siding with fiber-cement has lost value from 2007, it still nets an astonishing 87% ROI. If you prefer a foam-backed vinyl product replacement instead, you can still look to recoup 80% of your cost.
  • Window Replacement (vinyl or wood).  Windows are not only an aesthetic feature. For most homeowners, they represent one of the easiest ways to lower home heating and cooling bills. By replacing your current windows with more efficient vinyl or wood ones, you can save on your utility bills, attract future home buyers and net a nearly 80% (vinyl) or 77% (wood) return on your investment.

More homeowners refinancing into shorter loans: survey

(Reuters) - More homeowners prefer to pay off their mortgages sooner as interest rates have stayed near rock-bottom and weak labor conditions have caused them to reduce their debt loads, a survey showed on Monday.

The current trend in refinancing into shorter-loan terms is a stark contrast to the one during the height of the housing boom, when families were taking out bigger mortgages against the rising values of their homes.

Of those homeowners who refinanced a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage during the second quarter, 37 percent moved into a 15-year or 20-year fixed-rate loan. This is the highest since the third quarter of 2003, mortgage finance agency Freddie Mac said.

Technical Forecast for the Week Ahead

Investors and traders often ask me: 'Simon, why don't you allow a sneak peak at your Technical Forecast so I can see if it's for me?'

The simple reason we generally don't make the practice of 'previews' is to reserve the information in regard for those who are paying for the forecast. Having said that, I think that this week's forecast is a nice sneak peak without giving away the farm.

Below is the entire Technical Forecast for the week ahead published on July 17, 2011 (charts featured in this article are reduced due to upload restrictions):

In addition to all the 'normal' news, Wall Street will be focused on two developments this week: Earnings and the debt ceiling negotiations.

Rupert Murduch Attacked During Hearing

Where is the security for a public hearing? Instead of making Murduch a bad person, it actually will gain some sympathy on how he has handled the hearing.

Rupert Murdoch, the media mogul under fire for a growing phone-hacking scandal that has upended his empire, admitted to British MPs on Tuesday: "Today is the most humble day of my life."
The billionaire News Corp. founder and his son James testified before a committee of Parliament investigating the scandal, which has escalated in recent weeks to include allegations of bribery and corruption and forced the resignation of top officials at News Corp., Scotland Yard and even the office of Prime Minister David Cameron.
The elder Murdoch said the hacking by News of the Worldjournalists is "a matter of great regret" to everyone at the company.

The Right Times to Check your Credit Report

A lot of us only check our credit reports once a year. We wait for one full year before we request for a copy of our free credit reports. This way we need not worry about the payments and charges for having multiple copies of our credit files.

For others, they only check their reports when they need to seek credit lines. They only bother to review their credit records so that they can negotiate lower rates and higher credit limit on personal loans and credit card programs.

But when should we really check our credit reports? How often should we request for our credit records? This article will provide four specific times when you should request for your records from any of the three credit report bureaus.

Four Times When You Need to Check Credit Records
  1. You are preparing for a major credit based purchase.
  2. Your application for a loan has been denied.
  3. You suspect that your identity has been stolen.
  4. You want to repair bad credit.
