Foreign firms in US spent $490K on 1Q lobbying

WASHINGTON — A group representing the U.S.-based subsidiaries of foreign companies spent $490,000 in the first quarter to lobby the federal government on taxes, patent rules and other issues.

That's up from the $440,000 that the Organization for International Investment spent in the same period a year earlier, but far less than the $741,775 that it spent in the fourth quarter of 2010, according to the disclosure report filed on April 18.

AmEx lets small businesses trade points for Facebook ads

t's one thing to get free airline miles or hotel stays for credit card points, but here's an industry first: free Facebook ads.


Today, American Express and Facebook will roll out a program that allows the credit card giant's Membership Rewards customers to redeem points for ads on the social-media giant's site. The program is primarily targeted at small-business owners via American Express OPEN, but it's also open to millions of other AmEx card holders, says Ed Gilligan, vice chairman at American Express.


"When we ask small-business owners to name their biggest challenge, the answer is always finding new customers," Gilligan says.

Debt ceiling: Just do it

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Warnings from all three credit ratings agencies didn't do it. Seven weeks of talks among lawmakers didn't do it. Maybe President Obama's talks with Capitol Hill brass will do it.

But as of now, there's still no debt-reduction deal. And many lawmakers are still demanding one in exchange for their vote to increase the debt ceiling.

Here's an idea: Even if they can't come up with a deal by Aug. 2, lawmakers should raise the debt ceiling anyway. Then they should make a pot of coffee and go back to hammering out a debt-reduction plan.
